Videos of the Tamparuli old shophouse fire, 9th December 2008

    December 20th, 2008

On 9th December 2008 around 5am, one whole row of the old shophouses, out of 5 were destroyed in a fire.

Originally there were 6 shophouses built sometime 1954. One was destroyed in another fire in 1976.

Three sundry shops, a jewellery shop, a tailor shop, two book stores, a restaurant and two shops selling mobile phones were totally destroyed.

Also destroyed were a luxury car which belonged one of the shopowners:

The fire was believed to have started in the jewellery shop.

All 30 people who lived in the building residing in the units escaped in time.

    Some videos follow.

The following was taken apparently around 6am:

The uploader of the above video claimed that the fire started at midnight, but firemen only arrived several hours later, even though there is a fire station located about 10 minutes drive away in the town of Tuaran.

The following should be later as it was already light. Fire’s still raging:

The following was apparently taken at 9am; by then the fire was fully extinguished:

Maybe it’s a case of people expecting others to have called the fire dept, and in the end turned out that nobody did until it’s too late.

Did you know that after the heritage shop in Tamparuli burned down, another heritage shop in Kuala Penyu burned donw a few days later.

When I was in Kuala Penyu, a coleague who own one of the lot in the burned down heritage shop said, he actually did went to Tamparuli to take the photo of the burned shops… only to carry the ‘bad luck’ with him to Kuala Penyu! Unbelieveable…

Then the story of the BOMBA… same thing… The station is only like 10 minutes away and has the latest and best station in that region… proably better than Tuaran or KK station. Unfortunately, it took them ages to arrive they said… Probable reason… the fireman was not around in the station… probably went for aramaitee or just tea… and took them sometimes to assemble back… so, the same case could happen in Tuaran too… so it is useless to have the best station when the fireman are not ready all the time…
