Penampang floods for the 6th time in 2008, 30th August
August 30th, 2008I had planned to balik kampung this afternoon, after attending the wedding reception a colleague, Kenneth at Foo Chow Hall.
As usual the weather was fine in the morning, just nice so as not to necessitate the wearing of a cap, but by 12 something it was already raining, not particularly heavy, but of course what really matters is how heavy the rain is upstream.
I knew the answer at 5 something.
First flood warning siren blared, quickly followed by the 2nd and 3rd (and final) warning. That could only mean one thing: 99% chance the river is going to overflow within the next 5 minutes.
The water level reached its peak around 9 something - mercifully not as bad as before, only knee-high downstairs.

we were still at a wedding when we received a call telling us the water has risen up. but last night wasnt that bad lah kan?
Compared to the big ones, this one was a mere puddle…
By golly, it’s been raining twice a day in KL for the last week! Mayhem!!
I read about how the water level rose by 2 meters in 1 hour there: scary!
On our back we took the Bantayan-Minintod way to Penampang and it had already started to get flooded. Back in my mind, I bet Ben will blog about the flood again…and sure enough.
Hope it wasn’t bad this time.
A big reason to blog about this is to record for posterity and leverage the power of the net to highlight the problem: this should be one of the many steps towards a solution.
I’ve been living in Penampang for about 11 years, and I don’t think it has ever been this bad before.
Already I got an interesting insight from an EIA consultant by blogging about it.
