Do you think these songs are good enough for Akademi Fantasia 6 (AF6) finalists?

    May 8th, 2008

There was a songwriting competition by MAESTRO which ended recently. Those selected will get the exposure afforded by Akademi Fantasia (AF) 6 finalists.

Here are two of our submissions.

All vocals, melody, arrangement, lyrics done by the respective composers.

By Ezbon a.k.a. Golib: “Kembalikan Senyum”

    [audio:Golib - kembalikan senyum.mp3]

By Mackley a.k.a Bodidi: “Kepalsuan Hidup”

    [audio:Bodidi - kepalsuan hidup.mp3]

Everything recorded and done in a home studio by Ezbon, an entirely self-taught musician and home recording expert:

He’s also proficient in jingle-making and songwriting.

More details, or if you want engage his expertise, please do leave a note.

    Nice bah the song!!!

    Way to go..

One of the reasons why local Sabahan songs sound rather dry is because there are no recording studio that is capable of processing those songs at high quality, all mesti pergi Semenanjung!! Astaga…..

Anyway ada Carlsberg minum ada IDEA la tu.

    Hehehe…..

Actually Sabah has at least one top notch audio recording studio at UMS. I blogged about this before - we (well, I am not directly involved in my brothers’ band’s musicianship but I’m involved in the management part) recorded our first album there.

I was told that the problem is the mastering part where Sabah does not have expert in this area - this is more art than science. For our album, we engaged the services of Roger Wang but after listening to the result, bandmembers said that that was not good enough.

I blogged about some of the songs last year (sorry no lyrics yet). Pls note that the songs are the “raw” i.e. nonpolished/nonmastered versions. And pls excuse my amateurish attempts at making the video.

This one is what happens when the Beatles influences Kadazandusun musicians:

This one has a video of what it’s like in the UMS studio:

The following is a song with Malay lyrics; another good melody written by Ezbon:

I blogged about studio 2 at UMS back in January. Note that this is only the 2nd studio - the first studio has equipment that costs seven figures (RM), Neumann microphones costing RM20,000 etc etc:

    Notes:
    - sponsor has been found.
    - the album has not been released yet as of now.

Hey this is good! But like me too, we still lack the Mastering part. You are right Ben. It’s a real art. Need a sound engineer with a good instinct.
