What would people do if they walked into an elevator and a guy with a big knife and bloody shirt walked in after them?

    January 16th, 2008

With available-online-only shows like those done by David Spates, the Internet is the new TV.

Here, he tackles the question: “What would people do if they walked into an elevator and a guy with a big knife and bloody shirt walked in after them?”

Then he dresses up as a guy with a big knife and bloody shirt, walks in after people in a lift, and videos everything.

Oregon Coast: 362 miles of publicly accessible coastline

    January 15th, 2008

The Oregon Coast is the common name of the coastline of the state of Oregon of the United States, located on the west of the country, running along the Pacific Ocean. It runs for a full 362 miles, from Astoria to the border with the state of California.

It is truly unique in that the whole coastline, yes, all 362 miles of it is public land. Absolutely none in private hands. Why? Because the laws of the state of Oregon do not allow anybody, no matter how much money they might offer, to privately own even an inch of the famed Oregon coastline.

You know what that means??? It means you can have a very very long walk on the beach. If not, you can settle for a leisurely vacation with loved ones in a house or a condominium, like the ones offered by Oregon Vacation Rentals.

Even more amazingly, for a top industrialised country, and the fact that Oregon is located near the sea, there are absolutely no large cities located anywhere on its coast. Only tiny ones. The biggest city/area is Coos Bay/North Bend on the South Coast. The total population is a mere 25,000. That’s definitely very small, especially when compared to other cities in California’s coast further south.

And no, this is not caused by another one of the state laws, but rather due to nature: there is a distinct lack of harbours deep enough to allow access to agricultural areas further inland.

And the fact that the coasts boasts old logging towns, fishing villages and artists’ colonies truly sounds like a dream vacation for me, a world away from LA, San Francisco, Las Vegas and what have you.

Now, perhaps the only remaining question is: are the beach homes as good as the ones on the Outer Banks of North Carolina?

    The perfect pop song

    January 15th, 2008

It must possess mega hooks, i.e. melodies so sugary you’d instantly remember the melody the first time you hear it. And it sticks. A side effect is: after too many listenings you could start to get sick of it.

A perfect example is the Indonesian group Letto’s “Ruang Rindu.” This song has all the qualities for a worldwide smash.

Taken off their first album which has already sold 300,000 (that’s double platinum in Indonesia), the song was written by the vocalist and keyboardist, Noe, real name Sabrang Mowo Damar Panuluh, 28.

Interestingly, he listed Queen as the first in his list of favourite bands. Queen is also the favourite band of Ahmad Dhani, the leader/songwriter of Indonesia’s top group Dewa 19.

The album was released in Indonesia in 2005, and in Malaysia in July 2007.

    The best Sabah-style joke ever

    January 14th, 2008

The following has been around for probably more than 10 years, but it’s so good it’s worth repeating again. Imagine if this became a script and acted out. It would be hilarious.

    Author: Unknown
Note: some parts have been amended to correct errors.
    Language: Malay

If you didn’t think it’s funny, well at least it’s funnier than jokes about people needing rhinoplasty in Baltimore

    Cikgu

    Murid-murid: Selamat pagi, cikgu.

Cikgu: (Menengking) Mengapa selamat pagi sahaja? Petang dan malam awak doakan saya tak selamat?

Murid-murid: Selamat pagi, petang dan malam cikgu!

Cikgu: Panjang sangat! Tak pernah dibuat oleh orang! Kata selamat sejahtera! Senang dan penuh bermakna. Lagipun ucapan ini meliputi semua masa dan keadaan.

    Murid-murid: Selamat sejahtera cikgu!

Cikgu: Sama-sama, duduk! Dengar sini baik-baik. Hari ini cikgu nak uji kamu semua tentang perkataan berlawan. Bila cikgu sebutkan perkataannya, kamu semua mesti menjawab dengan cepat, lawan bagi perkataan-perkataan itu, faham?

    Murid-murid: Faham, cikgu!

Cikgu: Saya tak mahu ada apa-apa gangguan.

    Murid-murid: (senyap)

    Cikgu: Pandai!

    Murid-murid: Bodoh!

    Cikgu: Tinggi!

    Murid-murid: Rendah!

    Cikgu: Jauh!

    Murid-murid: Dekat!

    Cikgu: Berjaya!

    Murid-murid: Usno!

    Cikgu: Salah!

    Murid-murid: Betul!

    Cikgu: Bodoh!

    Murid-murid: Pandai!

    Cikgu: Bukan!

    Murid-murid: Ya!

    Cikgu: Oh Tuhan!

    Murid-murid: Oh Hamba!

    Cikgu: Dengar ini!

    Murid-murid: Cakap itu!

    Cikgu: Diam!

    Murid-murid: Bising!

    Cikgu: Itu bukan pertanyaan, bodoh!

    Murid-murid: Ini adalah jawapan, pandai!

    Cikgu: Mati aku!

    Murid-murid: Hidup kami!

    Cikgu: Rotan baru tau!

    Murid-murid: Akar lama tak tau!

    Cikgu: Malas aku ajar kamu!

    Murid-murid: Rajin kami belajar cikgu!

    Cikgu: Kamu gila!

    Murid-murid: Kami siuman!

    Cikgu: Cukup! Cukup!

    Murid-murid: Kurang! Kurang!

    Cikgu: Sudah! Sudah!

    Murid-murid: Belum! Belum!

Cikgu: Mengapa kamu semua bodoh sangat?

    Murid-murid: Sebab saya seorang pandai!

    Cikgu: Oh! Melawan!

    Murid-murid: Oh! Mengalah!

    Cikgu: Kurang ajar!

    Murid-murid: Cukup ajar!

    Cikgu: Habis aku!

    Murid-murid: Kekal kami!

    Cikgu: O.K. Pelajaran sudah habis!

    Murid-murid: K.O. Pelajaran belum bermula!

    Cikgu: Sudah, bodoh!

    Murid-murid: Belum, pandai!

    Cikgu: Berdiri!

    Murid-murid: Duduk!

    Cikgu: Saya kata USNO salah!

    Murid-murid: Kami dengar BERJAYA betul!

    Cikgu: Bangang kamu ni!

    Murid-murid: Cerdik kami tu!

    Cikgu: Rosak!

    Murid-murid: Baik!

Cikgu: Kamu semua ditahan tengah hari ini!

Murid-murid: Saya seorang dilepaskan tepi malam itu!

Cikgu: (Senyap dan mengambil buku-bukunya keluar.)

Sebentar kemudian, loceng pun berdering.

Pictures of audio equipments at recording studio 2 of Universiti Malaysia Sabah

    January 12th, 2008

Our rock band Papier Mache did some re-recording of a few tracks for their upcoming debut album at the “new recording studio” at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on the 7th of December 2007.

The studio is located on the first floor of the university’s Sekolah Pengajian Seni (School of Art Studies) building.

The equipments are not as jaw-droppingly state-of-the-art (read: extremely expensive) compared to the other studio located on the basement (I took many videos and pictures of that last year) and the room was very cosy, only about 10′ x 10′ – much like a home studio, but still the equipments are top-notch.

All costs quoted below are originally in US Dollars, hence packing & transportation costs and any taxes are not included yet. Hence the final cost would be higher.

The biggest thing in the room is the Digidesign / Focusrite, Control|24, apparently costing more than RM24,000:

The microphone is an AKG C 414 B-TL II, not in production anymore, but still fetching more than RM2,000 at ebay:

    condenser-mike.jpg

The monitor speakers are Event Studio Precision [either 6 or 8] Active Monitors, which can cost up to RM3,000:

For software, it’s ProTools running on a Macintosh PC:
