Dewa 19 will have a meet-the-fan session at Centre Point, Kota Kinabalu, 15th Dec 2007, 2pm

    December 14th, 2007

I attended Dewa 19’s press conference at Meeting Room 5, Magellan Sutera just now. I heard that their flight was delayed due to bad weather in KL(?), and that they only touched down at KKIA 6.20+pm. They made their entrance at the said meeting room at almost 7pm. The VIP present included Datuk Masidi Manjun, the State Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment.

The press conference was supposed to be for journalists only, but this “IT Consultant” was there too, as well as at least 2 fanatical fans, who could hardly contain their excitement when Ahmad Dhani, Once and gang walked into the room.

Of course this is yet another unmissable photo opportunity. I didn’t bring my camera, but there were many pro photographers there with big DSLRs clicking away, so the photos will come later.

One of the things mentioned was that they will have a meet-the-fan, album-signing etc session at Centre Point’s ground floor tomorrow afternoon.

Dewa 19 will arrive at Kota Kinabalu International Airport tomorrow (14th Dec 2007), 5.35pm, VIP lounge

    December 13th, 2007

Thank you little bird. So you know what to do. Perhaps it’s the only chance to get close to Ahmad Dhani, Once and the gang.

For their first Malaysian tour, top Indonesian (Surabaya) rock band Dewa 19 (was known as simply “Dewa” between 2000 and 2004) chose of all places, Stadium Likas, Kota Kinabalu. Then it’s 3 different cities every day, then a 4-day break before the final concert at Stadium Negara.

Supporting acts: Dewi Dewi (Indon all-girl group), Jinbara, Ella: perhaps in that order of appearance. That would mean Dewa 19 will only take to the stage after 9pm?!

Leader, 2nd vocalist, guitarist and songwriter of the band: Ahmad Dhani Prasetyo, 35. Apparently a huge Queen fan:

Justin Lusah’s Volume 2: the album that contains “Jambatan Tamparuli”

    December 12th, 2007

Justin Lusah’s second album, produced in the mid 1970s, entitled “Jambatan Tamparuli” or “Volume 2″ contained the most famous Kadazandusun song ever - the title track.

Jambatan Tamparuli has been covered so many times that the younger generation might have never heard the original version. To me, the original sounds raw (in a nice way), has a beautiful melody but the beat is too quick for sumazau dancing.

But what about the other 11 songs in the album? Are they any good?

    Short answer:

This being Justin’s heyday, ALL the songs and beautiful and memorable, with at least one truly legendary track, and that is not the title track.

    Long answer:

3 of the best songs from Volume 1 reappeared here, in slightly different versions: Oi Darling, Kada Arau Monduli and Sumandak Mantad Sunsuron. However, I still prefer the versions in Volume 1. Then, the songs seemed more laidback, less studio-like, more like they were being played in a kampung house surrounded by paddy fields or rubber trees overlooked by Mount Kinabalu.

In this album, Justin expanded his repertoire to contain songs with new beats (”Ika Pointanom Id Ginawoku” was done in march), style and instrument (added the use of saxophone) and sang a few songs in the Tangara dialect (Kadazandusun language as it is commonly spoken in Penampang), where before he sang all the songs in the Bundu-Liwan dialect (Kadazandusun language as it is commonly spoken in Tambunan).

I might be wrong here, but this album could be the one which set the trend of including at least one joget song (”Joget Tambunan”) in Kadazandusun music albums. This trend is still being followed until today.

As for the standout song, I’d have to say “Ih Ling Nokito Ku Di Hari Tiga” as the one possessing legendary status. To me, it’s the one true classic in this album, a tune you’d hum years to come.

Yours truly have listened to this album countless times over many years, up until now, right from the time it was first released in the mid 1970s, and I was still in primary school at that time!

In conclusion, I would say it’s definitely one of the best Kadazandusun music albums ever made, mandatory listening if you’re even slightly interested in Kadazandusun music. And perhaps it’s the second best after Justin Lusah’s incomparable first album.

If you like this, good luck tracking it down.

Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas at ICT Gala Night, Magellan Sutera, 29th November 2007

    December 10th, 2007

After several missed opportunities, finally I saw the 2007 Unduk Ngadau / The Harvest Queen sing live.

    img_5563-s.jpg

    img_5495-s.jpg

    joanna-1-s.jpg

Well, what can I say, she’s an absolutely fantastic vocalist. And an Unduk Ngadau to boot. Now that’s a total package!

She sang quite a few songs, all live, ably backed by the State Cultural Board, including “Adaa” (IMHO the 2004 Kadazandusun song of the year) and “Endless Love”.

    joanna-2-s.jpg

But the most impressive were “Tiada Lagi” where IMHO she bettered both the original by Mayang Sari and Amy Search’s version. Then she took on Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”, which to me, nearly equalled Ms Houston’s studio version!

    img_5559-s.jpg

Incidentally, Whitney was in KL around the same time for the Live N Loud event. Someone blogged that Whitney made her entry at 1.40am and sang about 4 songs, and that she also sang “I will Always Love You” and from what I read, she could hardly reach the highest notes.

So of course this is an unmissable photo opportunity:

    ben-joanna-s.jpg

At this stage, 18-year old Jo-Anna doesn’t have managers / bodyguards guarding her every move yet. When she left at 9 something barely anybody noticed. It might not stay like that for too long!

I was first impressed with her singing, as well as songwriting abilities 3 years ago with “Koupusan”, when she was an unknown 15-year old:

In 1991, two classic music albums were released: Nirvana’s “Nevermind” and …

    December 8th, 2007

…what else but the Singaporean album “Why You So Like Dat?” by Siva Choy and the Kopi Kat Klan. At that time, I was heavily into hard rock music and would never normally entertain anything without screeching guitars. The title track of the album didn’t have anything but drum machines and Singlish rapping, but something about it sticks, and a few days ago I heard it again for the first time in more than 10 years.

    Do you still remember this?

A review of Tuaran Beach Resort (formerly known as Sabandar Bay Resort)

    December 6th, 2007

For the 2nd consecutive year we had our annual department’s workshop at this resort, from 29th November to 1st December. We’ve been holding our workshop annually since 2003.

While we were there last year they were on transition phase - change of management, rebranding etc. This year were they better prepared?

Well, the road there is better, but the last kilometre is still not fully sealed, although the potholes are now covered. The road on the last 2 kilometres are still rather narrow, but being a “kampung” road, that is acceptable. The last few days were rainy, so some patches are rather muddy.

The map as presented on their website is still cryptic - do you think you can find the way simply by looking at this?

    tuaran-beach-resort-2.jpg

Luckily, once you get nearer the resort, there are plenty of signboards directing you, although they could be difficult to see at night.

The website says that it’s located “just 40 minutes by car away from Kota Kinabalu.” I think that would apply if you’re thoroughly familiar with the road and driving as fast as the law allows. If not, 1 hour, or even 90 minutes should be allocated.

    tuaran-beach-resort.jpg

When we arrived, Typhoon Hagibis had just left. The swimming pool was full of seawater and they were still cleaning it up when we left on Saturday. A few days earlier the guests’ vehicles had to be moved to higher ground due to the big waves pushing seawater up to the resorts’ steps!

I usually try not to get too excited looking at website or brochure pictures, as they usually portray the place to be prettier than it really is, but I’d have to say the beach is indeed as beautiful as portrayed on the website.

Last year at least one of my colleagues could not get out of his room because of the peculiar room door locking mechanism: you’re not supposed to push in the button located on the handle, but that’s what you’d normally do right? This year I didn’t hear anybody trapped, perhaps everybody’s learned their lesson, but still the door handle to my room looked very similar to the one last year.

My room was in one of the deluxe rooms. It was spacious, the materials top notch and all the TV channels actually worked. However, the port where you’re supposed to slot in your “keychain” is not working - meaning all the lights and aircon could be left running forever.

For the whole day of the 30th November, there was plenty of hot water and very little cold water in the bathroom, so taking a shower was not a pleasant experience.

And apparently some of my colleagues could not enter their rooms directly - they had to enter their neighbour’s room, then use the interconnecting door.

There’s free and fast WiFi access, where the strongest signal is in the lobby. You can still access the Net from the nearby restaurant and the Mengalum room upstairs even though the signal is low.

For the workshop, I was in charge of emergencies and first aid, and was pleasantly surprised to be informed that they would even send you free of charge to the nearest clinic or hospital free of charge, even if it’s just a little headache.

    Parking is more than adequate.

I am not fussy about food, so all I can say is that all of them taste good and there’s more than enough for everybody.

For our dinner on the second night, we used their flagship hall - the appropriately named Royal Grand Ballroom (or Royal Hall), which apparently can fit 100 round dinner tables. Our theme was “Malam Riang Ria Bersama 60an & 70an” [1960s and 1970s Night] and I must say the resort went to great lengths to ensure this theme was adhered to. First, it was the most elaborate food presentation (well, it was more like an “bon apetit” wish since it’s a buffet dinner) routine I’ve ever seen - complete with big motorcycles, bicycle riding all the way from the front up to the stage, the resort staff dancing to a P Ramlee song onstage, and finally the unveiling of the backdrop. Later, they were also involved to pick out the best dressed people - those wearing authentic-looking 60s/70s costumes. And no, no renaissance costumes.

You might never see yours truly wearing this kind of shades again

    picture-051-s.jpg

Later, everybody, having earlier been divided into groups, had to participate in a competition. You had to come up with a sketch, song presentation, dancing etc, as long as it adheres to the theme of the dinner. So here I am trying to be P Ramlee:

    picture-165-s.jpg

And ended up looking like a bad Elvis impersonator:

    finale-persembahan-kumpulan-mawar-3rd-place-s.jpg

But still we finished 3rd among 10 groups presenting:

    picture-208-s.jpg

By Monday, the general consensus is that this is the best workshop the department’s ever organised.

    December 4th, 2007

Hotel Reservations dot com offers an all-inclusive trip planning and booking services, for both business and leisure. It includes flight and car bookings. You can choose from the more than 70,000 places-to-stay offered, including hotels, motels, resorts, condominiums, and Bed & Breakfasts. So basically you can customise your search, although I have not checked whether you can search for places offering horseriding packages, in which case you can get ready that rarely used equestrian clothing.

The locations including the US, Europe and Asia.

They have been around for more than 6 years.

As well as the website, they can also be contacted 24×7 at 1-800-447-4136 if you are in the US,
00-800-1276-3549 if you are in Europe and (1) 817-333-5105 if you are anywhere else.

Perhaps what is most interesting is that they have a lowest price guarantee, in that they guarantee that their rates are the lowest you can find. If you find that someone else is offering a lower rate, they will either reduce their price to match the lower rate or cancel the reservation without a cancellation fee.

They offer discounts of up to 70% if you book online or call them to make special internet rate reservations.

Sabah-born Penny Wong, first Asian Minister in Australia’s history would never have made it in Malaysian politics

    December 4th, 2007

Her feat earned her flowing accolades from Malaysians, including the Chief Minister of Sabah and other leaders, and was widely reported in local media.

What was not mentioned is the fact that as well as being the first Asian minister in Australia’s history, she’s also the first openly gay member of the Australian cabinet.

The Sydney Star Observer reported in 2003 (link at the bottom) that:

The sexuality of new South Australian Labor senator Penny Wong was discussed in a feature interview with The Advertiser in August 2001. Reporter Samantha Maiden wrote: “In Labor circles, it is also well-known Senator Wong is gay, a fact she would prefer to leave as a private matter.” Although Wong knew that Maiden was including the reference in her article, she has since declined to discuss issues of a personal nature in the media.

The general attitude of Malaysian politics can be surmised in what former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir was reported to have said in September 2005 about his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim:

I cannot have a person who is like that… become the prime minister. Imagine having a gay prime minister. Nobody would be safe.

I suppose this would also apply to anybody in a leadership position, what more a public figure like a member of the federal cabinet.

As for the accolades on Ms Wong reported in the local media, Puteri Umno deputy chief and Papar MP Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin was reported to have said: “The appointment is an honour to Sabah-born women. I praise the new Australian PM for not allowing colour or ethnicity to cloud his decision on appointments to his Cabinet. What matters most is a person’s abilities.”

Could this statement be amended to “I praise the new Australian PM for not allowing colour or ethnicity, or sexual orientation to cloud his decision on appointments to his Cabinet.”

Advisor to SAPP Wanita (KK & Penampang Zone) Datin Stella Yong was reported to have said: “Hopefully, Sabah will follow suit after the next round of elections in appointing a capable woman as full Minister. It does not matter who the person is, regardless of race or religion, so long as she has the capacity to lead the women in Sabah and work with all communities, as well as having the ability to represent Sabah women at national level and in the international arena.”

Could this statement be amended to “It does not matter who the person is, regardless of race or religion, or sexual orientation, so long as she has the capacity to lead the women in Sabah and work with all communities, as well as having the ability to represent Sabah women at national level and in the international arena.”

Assistant Minister of Industrial Developments, Hjh Jainab Datuk Hj Ahmad Ayid was reported to have said: “She has done Sabah proud. Penny was appointed not because she is a woman but by virtue of her capabilities and qualifications.”

Could this statement be amended to “Penny was appointed not because she is a woman but by virtue of her capabilities and qualifications. The fact that she is gay does not disqualify her.”

What do you think? Should capable, openly gay Malaysians be allowed to hold public office?
