Gold bullions as a mechanism to preserve wealth and purchasing power

    November 21st, 2007

This has nothing to do with gold jewellery or things to be worn as ornaments, but rather investment tools: gold coins or ingots, to be stored in banks. Gold ingots are pure bullion cast into standard shapes, like bars.

Gold bullions have long been accepted as investments that can protect wealth and preserve one’s purchasing power. That means not just governments can have gold reserves, but individuals too.

Monex Deposit Company (MDC), established by the Carabini family and based in California is a company offering such products for sale. They can deliver them to you or store it for you at a safe location. They have been doing this for more than 30 years, and is one of the leaders in its field in the US, boasting the following:

    - competitive prices
    - transactions worth more than USD25 billion
    - 80% repeat clients
    - almost one third of new clients are referrals from existing ones

Instant blings enable you to bling almost anything

    November 21st, 2007

Instantbling.com sells blings, which are different from the usual ones: they come prearranged in patterns and you can simply peel them off and stick them on basically anything. They have specially designed blings for:
    - jeans and tops
    - shoes
    - cell phones
    - iPods
    - room accessories and lockers
    - the car
    - even the pets: yes, the dog can have its own bling too!

On top of that, they have ideas for blings to be stuck on sunglasses, jewelry, hats, bags, even guitars and skateboards!.

There’s even new stuff called “Bling It On Magnetic” where instead of peel-and-stick, it uses magnetism. That means it’s perfect for fridges, cars and school lockers: any metal surfaces will do.

These things are sure to be a hit with teens, and even those young at heart. While celebrities spend a bomb on the real thing, you can have your bling too, at a fraction of the cost. And one could hardly notice the difference.

As a bonus, currently they are offering a ticket to see Hannah Montana live in concert for every 100th customer. Theare are 200 tickets being given away at selected venue locations throughout the US to March 2008. If you are the lucky one, you will get to choose the venue and seating.

The 230-piece Deluxe Crystal Set, usually selling for USD19.95 comes in Heart, Star or Solid Ice. If you order now the number of pieces are doubled to 460. On top of that, you’ll also get free a USD5.95-valued heart-shaped bling. The total price for all that is USD45, so work out your savings.

    They even have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

You can also place your order by calling 1-800-592-3388 (you must be 18 or older to call).

    Dual-Action Cleanse® colon cleansers

    November 21st, 2007

If you feel bloated, lethargic and have dull skin & hair, you might need a colon cleanser, where it gets rid of toxins accumulated inside your digestive system, specifically your colon. By doing this, you prevent toxins from being absorbed by your body and causing damage. The toxins are in things like mucous and food which for some reason were not digested. This cleansing process is also called detoxification.

Colon cleansers on the market include Dual-Action Cleanse®, with its natural herbal formula. Detoxification gives many benefits, including increased vitality, decrease in excessive gas / bloating, better-looking skin and hair, and you could look trimmer too. In short, make you feel better!

Dual-Action Cleanse is called such because it is made up of two parts, one that supports the body’s organs including those that assist in detoxification and one that actually does the detoxification.

The USD59.90 pack is for 30 days, best taken once around breakfast and once around dinner.

The many covers of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is”

    November 20th, 2007

Who can forget one of the best-known songs of the 1980’s: Foreigner’s No.1 hit “I want to know what love is”. which reached no.1 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1985. It’s the group’s only song to do so.

In 2004 it was voted number 476 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

It was written by Mick Jones’s and Lou Gramm sang lead vocals in an inspired performance. Backing vocals were provided by the New Jersey Mass Choir, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday, and the Thompson Twins.

There have been many covers, testament to the quality of the song. However, I don’t have the Tina Arena and Clay Aiken covers - if you have them, please inform me. Thanks.

The following is the song, and some covers of it.

I think the best cover is by Wyonna Judd (2003). What do you think?

    Driving around Europe

    November 18th, 2007

I went Eurorailing to more than 10 countries in Europe in the summer of 1992. It is one of my fondest memories. Getting around on the trains was easy, even when we lost the train guidebook. It’s basically just making sure we had the relevant visas, get on the last train of the night, and by morning we’d be in a different country already - saving time and cost. I remember our encounter with a crazy Berliner who talked incessantly about Hitler, perhaps that’s why we didn’t really stay long there, if not we’d have to check out Hotels in Berlin.

    driving.JPG

However, if I had to drive a car around Europe, that would be a totally different scenario. I would need to know or have the following things ready:
    - Make sure I know which side of the road to drive on in which country. People drive on the left side of the road in Cyprus, Ireland, Malta and the United Kingdom. In most other countries in Europe, people drive on the right side of the road. To add to the confusion, in some countries like Belgium, France, Holland and Portugal, one would have to give way to traffic coming from the right.
    - Ensure my travelmates are very good navigators / map readers.
    - I would need a driving license issued in the EU. I am not sure if it’s possible to simply apply for a driving license if you already have a license issued in Malaysia, or whether you have to go through the whole process again
    - Make sure motor insurance is purchased and active
    - I would need to know the speed limits. For example, the speed limit on German motorways is 130 km/h but in Belgium it’s 120 km/h. Then in the UK it’s even less: 110 km/h and in Cyprus it’s a mere 100 km/h!
    - If I were driving in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia I would need to remember to get a toll sticker to affix on my windscreen at the border crossings into those countries.
    - I would need to research and book for hotels. If I were going to have a leisurely tour of the Louvre, I’d have to check out Hotels in Paris

Hotels in London are not really a necessity since we have Malaysia Hall, but hey, you can consider that a hotel too.

And Hotels in Barcelona was out of the question then because we chose not to go to Spain due to the visa’s cost and we wanted to avoid the crowds during the Olympics being held there at the same time.

Lastly, a travel health insurance policy is a must, just in case you fall ill along the way.

    The greatest Indonesian songs ever

    November 18th, 2007

The following is a list of the greatest Indonesian songs ever. This is like a Hall of Fame of Music Composition.

Qualification: the song must have been around for at least 20 years and the melody remains timeless.

Granted, some later songs are great too, but people like SO7, Peterpan, Dewa etc will have to wait for time to make its judgement.

However, I must add that this list doesn’t contain any song by legendary groups D’Mercys and D’Lloyd - they are totally in a league of their own and deserve a separate list.

Shima Uta: the greatest Okinawa-related song ever

    November 16th, 2007

When I went to Okinawa, Japan in November 2000 to undergo a course the first local song we were all taught is Shima Uta (= Island Song). It’s a beautiful song - one song and you’re hooked. I’d even say it’s on par with the greatest Japanese songs of all time - the classic Sukiyaki and Kanpai comes to mind.

It was written by Kazufumi Miyazawa of the group The Boom and was a big hit in Japan in either 1992 or 1993. Neither he nor any member of his band are from Okinawa, but he was inspired after visiting the island.

I went on to perform the song on live Japanese TV as part of a multinational group. Our lead singer was from the Philippines and the other performers included Indonesians, a Sri Lankan and at least one Thai. Haha… that was the first and last time I played music on live national TV. While in Japan, in all I was featured on the local papers 3 times and went on TV another time.

    Back to the song.

Here’s a list of all versions of the song I could find, and which you’ll be able to listen to at the bottom:

    1. by Rimi Natsukawa - she’s an Okinawan singer. IMHO this is the best ever version of the song, bettering The Boom’s original.
    2. by The Boom - the original.
    3. by Kazufumi Miyazawa - I believe this was recorded years after he released the original. Alternate lyrics and arrangement.
    4. by “Beto Shiroma” [authenticity can't be verified] - if you have any info, pls provide.
    5. A beautiful accapella version - I don’t know the original singers.
    6. Rimi Natsukawa performs this live with a male singer with acoustic guitars - beautiful.
    7. some Okinawan dude sings it folksy style
    8. The Boom’s original (Minus One version)
    9. by “Video Match” [authenticity can't be verified] - if you have any info, pls provide.
    10. by Alfredo Casero - This Argentinian became famous outside his country in 2002 when he recorded this song: it was the first single from his album, Casaerius. It became a huge hit in Argentina, where it was chosen as the anthem for the Argentine football team playing at the 2002 World Cup.

If you have any more versions, please inform me. Thanks ;-)

Malaysian netball is good enough to compete at world level, but standard is way below the top nations

    November 14th, 2007

Malaysia qualified for the netball world championships on merit for the first time when we finished 2nd to Singapore in the 2005 Asian Netball Championships. Singapore won that match 53-39.

The 2007 Netball World Championships, the 12th world championships was held 10th-17th November in New Zealand. There were 16 competing nations.

Top nations in world netball are New Zealand and Australia. Ever since the first world championships were held in 1963, only these 2 nations have ever been world champions.

In the 2007 edition, Malaysia were in the same pool as Barbados, England and South Africa.

In the first match, we lost to the 5th ranked South Africans 28-67.

In the 2nd match, we lost to 4th ranked England 16-99, in a score more resembling a severely lopsided basketball match. It’s the greatest points difference at a world championships since New Zealand’s walloping of the Cook Islands 107-17 back in 2003.

Last match was against 7th ranked Barbados, and we lost again 38-62. Barbados had already lost their matches against England and South Africa.

To see how far we are behind the top nations, consider this: in the other pool, Singapore lost to 8th ranked Fiji 32-61, then they also managed to lose to the Cook Islands 43-45.
