Soccer: after 18 games as England coach, Steve McClaren sacked

    November 22nd, 2007

After 15 months and 18 games. Record: 9 wins, 4 draws, 5 losses. Assistant Coach Terry Venables’ contract also terminated.

England failed to qualify for a major tournament since the 1994 World Cup.

After the loss to Croatia and before sacking, players diplomatic:

Peter Crouch: “I know the players have enjoyed working with him. We will get over it. It is a huge disappointment but if the manager stays I’m sure we’ll get over it.”

John Terry: “I give full support for Steve McClaren. It’s been great working with him. We have thoroughly enjoyed it, really enjoyed it, and we take collective responsibility.”

An England fan’s preview of the match where he predicted England will triumph 3-1:

And here’s Croatia vs England in Euro 2004, when England (in red) triumphed 4-2 with Scholes, Rooney (2) and Lampard finding the mark.

Even having the best players do not guarantee you will have the best team who will win everything. Just look at Real Madrid during their Galactico era, while Beckham was there - they did not sweep everything before them either.

McClaren might not be the best man for the job - some say he went beyond his abilities, just like Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool) during the Champions League… Steve was only 3rd choice as England coach, but he was at the right place at the right time.

I think his IQ is definitely more than 27: he did not resign but waited to be sacked instead - that way his employers are bound to pay him the remaining wages of his contract. And he wouldn’t be Eriksson’s England assistant for 6 years if he’s not fit for the job; and he’s involved with Man Utd’s 1999 treble too.
