The many covers of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is”

    November 20th, 2007

Who can forget one of the best-known songs of the 1980’s: Foreigner’s No.1 hit “I want to know what love is”. which reached no.1 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1985. It’s the group’s only song to do so.

In 2004 it was voted number 476 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

It was written by Mick Jones’s and Lou Gramm sang lead vocals in an inspired performance. Backing vocals were provided by the New Jersey Mass Choir, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday, and the Thompson Twins.

There have been many covers, testament to the quality of the song. However, I don’t have the Tina Arena and Clay Aiken covers - if you have them, please inform me. Thanks.

The following is the song, and some covers of it.

I think the best cover is by Wyonna Judd (2003). What do you think?

Sorry, imeem.com doesn’t allow everybody apart from the profile owner to stream the full version of Wynonna’s version, but here it is, as well as some other versions. I also came across Clay Aiken’s duet - I’ve always admired his voice and singing style, but I think he could’ve done better justice with his version.

Ya, I like the Wynonna version best. Of course, the original is still pretty good too.

Hahaaaaa.. the first time I heard this song is sang by Foreigners, so maybe that’s why I’ll say their version is the best.
But talking about covers, yes, Wynonna’s is the best. :)

I just updated the list - included another playlist from another streaming audio provider that allows Wynonna’s version.
