The best ever unknown Kadazandusun songwriter and vocalist

    September 30th, 2007

Zesmus Joannes, an employee with the State Forestry Department released an album in 2002, a year before Malaysians became Akademi Fantasia crazy. I got it on tape via direct sales from a friend, who was directly involved in producing the album. I have never seen the album in record shops anywhere, let alone hear his songs on local radio.

I have no idea how many copies of the album managed to be sold.

Which is a pity, because IMHO Zesmus is one of Sabah’s undiscovered gems. Excellent songwriter and great voice.

The following is the best song from his one and only album, a love song about a girl named Idah.

    Have you heard it before?

If you like it, I can’t say get the original, because when I contacted the friend who sold me the LP several years ago, he said they can’t even locate the master tape / disc anymore!

Good voice.. sounds a bit like Evaristus Gungkit to me. Pity his album didn’t get any publicity. But hey, he can always re-record or produce a new one these days..anytime man. Keep up the good work (kalau still aktif nyanyi la hehe)

I like his bassy voice (definitely not a baritone?), a bit like Rick Astley.

I suppose relying on roadshows at tamu grounds (like he reportedly did) is not enough - you need other publicity also like heavy radioplay, halftime song-play during Sabah home soccer matches, internet promotion, concerts.

At first, I was going to say “biasa saja”.
Then after 3 - 4 times, I began to love the music,
then the voice, then I forgot that GuRaNgAk mentioned Evaristus.

The music is relaxing (I have this effect on flute sounds)
    and the lyric is catchy.
Is this the only ‘obulih-bulih’ song in his album?

Ya. Sayang oh dia terus senyap - tiada lagi khabar berita. Dlm GATS nama dia Zosimus Joannes.
