Confession: I have a thing for songs favourite among the Timorese

    June 2nd, 2007

Update 10th June 2007: in a sure indication that I’ve totally lost touch with Akademi Fantasia (AF), I only found out that AF5 champion Mila sang one of my Om-favourites “benci tapi rindu” during the 4th concert when I casually passed by the TV this morning. True enough, it’s on youtube too, and Mila, you’ve still got some way to go to match Diana Nasution’s interpretation. And no, not Diana’s karaoke version (which was a letdown), but her original 70s version and the version she sang during song composer Rinto Harahap’s birthday celebrations (I’d call it the rock out version).

    ———————————–

I’d be the first in the line to purchase tickets, and perhaps the only non-Timorese in the queue, should I’is Sugianto ever decide to come to Sabah and perform her classic songs, which would definitely include this classic of classics, “jangan sakiti hatinya” penned by the legendary Rinto Harahap.

It has come to a point where I’d stroll in a music store, hear a good 70s Indon pop song “tested” by a Timorese guy, wait for him to make his purchase and leave, ask the guy at the counter : “I’d like to buy what the previous guy just bought”, pay for it, and hurriedly leave, lest someone I know laughs at me for purchasing yet another Ratih Purwasih, Endang S Taurina, Nia Daniaty or Betharia Sonatha “Best of the Best”collection.

I’is Sugianto performing “jangan sakiti hatinya” live:

A little about the song above. It was first recorded by I’is Sugianto in early or mid 1970s when I was in primary 1 or 2, or perhaps even earlier. The version performed above, by the original singer no less, must have been almost 30 years after its original release.

I even think Rinto Harahap and Charles Hutagalung are among the greatest songwriters who ever lived :-) Not quite Lennon/McCartney and Andersson/Ulvaeus standard, but even higher than P Ramlee or M Nasir.
