Can this happen in Malaysia: thief wins damages for injury during theft

    May 10th, 2007

The Star reported on 20th April that in 2004 in Vancouver, Canada, Daniel Baines shoplifted razor blades worth about RM300 from a shop. He was then tackled by store guards, resulting in him losing a tooth. In true North American fashion, he sued. The result: he was awarded RM36,000 for the injury, more than 100 times the value of the goods he stole. I don’t think fixing a tooth will cost that much.
